  • Dark, bittersweet chocolate. Chocolate is an antioxidant source, and the darker the chocolate, the higher the antioxidant amount you can get. Bittersweet chocolate is also better than sweet milk chocolate, because the sugar intake is littler. The best chocolate is the one without sugary or fatty filling, like ganache or cream.

  • Peanut butter. This is satisfying and a high source of protein. However, the best way to eat peanut butter is with plain crackers; it will be more satisfying as snack between meals. Choose low-fat variant for the peanut butter.

  • Popcorn. Plain popcorn is low in calorie, but if you do not drizzle it with butter and too much salt. To make it healthier, make plain popcorn, but add condiment in moderate amount, like a little salt or healthy butter.

  • Mixed nuts. Nuts are healthy and satisfying, and they fill you up until the next meal. Mixed nuts are quite satisfying, especially if you can fry them yourself (because you can regulate the amount of oil and salt used).

Ideal healthy snacks can satisfy your craving and fill your belly until the next meal. However, it is fine if you want to cheat once in a while.

If you really want to eat or drink “junk snacks” like soda, cookies or candy bars, it is fine in moderation. In fact, you are advised to do this to satisfy craving, but still with portion control. Healthy snacking tips from US Department of Agriculture include extra 100 calories allowed for indulgence here and there, as long as you stay within the recommended 2,000 calorie diet per day (less or more depending on your age and activities). Portion control is the key; just eat a small pack of potato chips, a can of soda or a small candy bar per day.


Healthy snacking is not about preventing you from eating delicious foods, but controlling how much you eat so you do not consume excessively.
