When you wish to practice yoga exercise seriously, you probably consider joining a yoga class, complete with schedules and instructors. However, just because you join a class does not mean that you will not experience injuries. The rising popularity of yoga and yoga classes also sees the rising amount of yoga-related injuries, including those that happened in classes.


There is nothing wrong with practicing yoga in class, but you need to practice some exercise tips to make sure you do not get injured easily.

Tips to Avoid Yoga Class Injuries

Injury potentials in a yoga class can be caused by various factors; from the teacher, to the atmosphere when you are practicing among many people, to your own self-control. Here are some tips to avoid injuries that can be caused by these factors in a yoga class:

  • Do not compete with other students. Feeling the urge to “compete” with other students is something that many beginner yoga class students often experience. You are following basic moves as your teacher show, but when you see a student who easily does more advanced moves, you attempt to follow despite still not trained enough. Always tell yourself that yoga is an exercise to improve your mind and body and gain positive benefits, not for competition.

  • Always be realistic. This is one of the most common yoga exercise tips to emphasize simply because new students often experience injuries from unrealistic expectations when learning yoga. You will not be able to do headstand or put legs behind the head only after several yoga practices, since those advanced moves require years of practice. Therefore, do not attempt to do dangerous poses just because you do not have patience.

  • Choose yoga exercise that trains alignment, not speed. Alignment-based yoga moves have low intensity and can help you aligning body positions and shapes, unlike movement-based yoga that can put strain on joints or muscles. Yoga types that focus on alignment-based training are, such as, Vinyasa, Iyengar, or Anusara yoga.

  • Be more cautious when doing moves that press injury-prone areas. In yoga, areas that often experience injuries are hamstrings, neck, knees, and lower back. Therefore, make sure to control your movements when putting pressure on those parts. If possible, use props or yoga exercise tools to help you doing several poses, especially if you have injuries.

  • Find qualified teacher. Good yoga teachers must fulfill standards that are applied formally in the country. Find out what qualifications a country demands from yoga teachers, and choose a teacher who has those qualifications. A good teacher will push each student by paying attention to each other’s level and ability, without forcing you to do something outside your limit.

Remember, yoga is no longer considered as simple, low impact exercise. While it is not as intense as basketball or aerobic exercise, for example, it still puts pressures and challenges on your body. Choosing the right teachers and having good self-control are the best ways to avoid injuries in yoga exercise when joining a class.
